Lucid Technics
2005 – 2021

From insight to impact, at every scale

Lucid Technics was a technology consulting practice founded by David Hodge in 2005 and later joined by partner Bediako George. For sixteen years, we served as technical leaders to startups finding their footing, nonprofits scaling their missions, Fortune 500 companies navigating transformation, and government agencies modernizing critical systems.

What We Did

Technology leadership, not just technology advice

Lucid Technics wasn't a body shop or a staff augmentation firm. We embedded as technology leadership — sitting at the executive table, shaping strategy, making architecture decisions, and building the engineering cultures that outlasted our engagements.

Our clients didn't need another consultant with a slide deck. They needed someone who could see the whole board: the technology, the team, the business model, the compliance landscape, and the path from where they were to where they needed to be.

For Startups & Nonprofits

Small teams, asymmetric impact. We built custom software with lean, focused engineering teams that punched well above their weight — delivering complex financial systems, large-scale RESTful APIs, and mission-critical applications that gave our clients capabilities their size and budget shouldn't have made possible.

For Enterprise & Government

Cloud migration through developer enablement. We guided organizations and their engineering teams toward application modernization, helped leadership understand and optimize their FinOps costs, built scalable testing practices from web accessibility to performance, and led efforts to create universal shared services across the enterprise.

Selected Work

Projects & open source

We built tools we believed in and shared them openly. Alongside client engagements, we created open source frameworks that powered much of our delivery work.

Open Source

Airlift

An open source code generation framework for Google App Engine and AWS. Airlift was the engine behind much of our delivery — it let us rapidly stand up secure, scalable cloud applications and spend less time on infrastructure code and more time on business logic.

Open Source

Dictation

An English-based domain specific language for describing business applications. Write plain English requirements — data models, audit rules, security constraints — and Dictation would generate working software through Airlift, cutting typical project timelines by 50% or more.

Nonprofit

Northern Virginia Area Health Education Center

Replaced a fax-and-paper interpreter scheduling operation with a full cloud workflow on Google App Engine. Orders, assignments, smart encounter forms, invoicing, and payments — all automated. We also applied predictive machine learning to optimize interpreter scheduling.

Financial Services

Ez-XBRL Solutions

Built natural language processing and predictive analytics tools to automate XBRL tag selection in SEC corporate filings — transforming an extremely manual annotation process into an intelligent, machine-assisted workflow.

The Arc

Sixteen years in motion

2005
Founded Lucid Technics as a solo consulting practice in Northern Virginia, serving early-stage startups and small businesses navigating their first serious technology decisions.
2007
Bediako George joined as partner, expanding the practice's capacity and technical depth. Together, we grew from a solo consultancy into a firm capable of serving larger and more complex engagements.
2008 – 2012
Became early adopters of Google Cloud Platform, building on App Engine when it was still in its infancy. Created Airlift, our open source code generation framework, and Dictation, a plain-English DSL for describing business applications — together they became the backbone of our delivery work. Built cloud-native systems for the Northern Virginia Area Health Education Center. Expanded into enterprise and government consulting alongside Fortune 500 clients and federal agencies.
2013 – 2017
Deepened expertise in multi-cloud architecture and compliance frameworks. Applied machine learning and NLP to automate SEC corporate filing annotation with Ez-XBRL Solutions. Helped government clients navigate FedRAMP and DoD impact levels while keeping pace with the shift toward containerization and DevOps practices.
2018 – 2021
Deepened expertise across cloud platforms — especially Google Cloud — and machine learning. Stood up enabling teams, in the Team Topologies sense, to help enterprise organizations modernize legacy applications and adopt modern engineering practices. Guided stream-aligned teams through cloud migration, CI/CD adoption, and platform engineering while embedding FinOps and infrastructure-as-code disciplines at scale. After sixteen years of technology leadership across every sector we set out to serve, Lucid Technics closed its doors.

The chapter closed. The story continues.

Lucid Technics is no longer taking on new engagements, but David Hodge continues to work at the intersection of innovation, disruptive strategy, and technical leadership. If you're a former client, collaborator, or someone who wants to connect — the door is always open.
